HUBBLE finds a Companion to NORTH STAR
Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed something as constant as the North Star:
A hidden companion. There is photographic proof that Polaris, as the bright star and navigational aid was formally called, has two stellar companions.
The first, Polaris B, has been known since 1870 and can easily be seen with even a smaller telescope; Polaris AB, has been inferred but eluded direct detection because it was close to Polaris and relatively faint.
The North Star is a super-giant more than 2000 times brighter than the sun, while its newly photographed second companion is a dwarf star two billion miles from it. “With Hubble, we’ve pulled the North Star’s companion out of the shadow and into the spotlight,” said Howard Bond of the Space Telescope Science Institute. The Baltimore Institute conducts science operations for the orbiting Hubble.

Beating Bad Breath – Good Dental Health to you
When’s the best time to see your Dentist? Answer: Tooth-hurty any day.
Halitosis often stems from food particles in your mouth or from dry mouth. To prevent or reduce bad breath:
- Brush your teeth or use a mouthwash after you eat
- Floss your teeth at least once a day
- Brush your tongue – the back of your tongue while you brush your teeth
- Drink water to keep your mouth moist to wash away dead cells
- Avoid foods like onions and garlic that may cause bad breath
- Clean your dentures daily which can harbor bacteria and food particles
- See your dentist – Bad breath that doesn’t respond may be related to periodontal disease, infection, abscessed teeth or other conditions
FUNGI for Your Health
Mushrooms may prove to be an even better natural source of antioxidants than fruits and vegetables, according to Penn State food scientists. Antioxidants have been shown to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases. Portabellas, criminis and white button mushrooms, the most commonly consumed varieties in the US, contain the most ergothioneine, a metabolite with strong antioxidant properties that has been shown to provide cellular protection in the human body. White buttons – America’s favorite mushrooms – have about 12 times more ergothioneine than wheat germ and four times more than chicken liver. Source: Penn State Univ.

The Walsh Book Club – 2006 started out with a Christmas gift set of paperback novels by Patrick O’Brian
and 10 of his 21 books in the Aubrey-Maturin adventure series. You probably remember the movie “Master and Commander” starring
Russell Crowe as the basis for this series of wonderfully written novels. These are truly books that offer both sensual and intellectual enjoyment. Sailing in square-rigged ships early in the 19th century fighting naval battles with enemies of England and pirates of all types around the world was tough enough to describe but relating the stories with such exquisite style and interest keeps you up nights and early each day glued to the books until the characters become your dear friends.
